چکیده

A key challenge facing computer vision systems is the presence of highly specular surfaces. Such surfaces present a challenge to conventional vision systems due to their reflective nature, which can mask the true structure of the surface and lead to incorrect measurements when traditional computer vision algorithms are used. Here we present a novel approach to reconstructing the local surface structure of highly specular, planar objects. The local surface structure of an object is obtained by utilizing the specular nature of the surface directly, rather than by making the common assumption that specularities are rare or do not exist. The basis of the technique presented here is to project controlled light patterns onto the object’s surface and to infer local surface structure by examining the interaction of the illuminant and the surface. The approach can be used to recover both specular and diffuse surface regions. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach.

Specular Surface Recovery via Coded Target Stereopsis

A key challenge facing space-based computer vision systems is the presence of highly specular surfaces. Such surfaces present a challenge to conventional vision systems due to specular re ections, which may mask the true location of objects and lead to incorrect measurements. The problem is complicated by the fact that the use of high-powered illuminants, such as laser beams, can be problematic...

General Specular Surface Triangulation

We present a method for the reconstruction of a specular surface, using a single camera viewpoint and the reflection of a planar target placed at two different positions. Contrarily to most specular surface reconstruction algorithms, our method makes no assumption on the regularity or continuity of the specular surface, and outputs a set of 3D points along with corresponding surface normals, al...

Local Surface Reconstruction of Objects in Space

The increasing number of objects orbiting our planet necessitates the creation of sensing systems designed to determine the surface structure of such objects. One of the key challenges facing computer vision systems used in space is the presence of specular surfaces on most man-made orbital objects. Such surfaces present a challenge to conventional vision systems due to specular reflections, wh...

Specular Surface Recovery from Reflections of a Planar Pattern Undergoing an Unknown Pure Translation

This paper addresses the problem of specular surface recovery, and proposes a novel solution based on observing the reflections of a translating planar pattern. Previous works have demonstrated that a specular surface can be recovered from the reflections of two calibrated planar patterns. In this paper, however, only one reference planar pattern is assumed to have been calibrated against a fix...

Local surface reconstruction of orbital objects

Conventional vision systems designed to reconstruct the surfaces of objects generally handle only diffuse objects or objects with a minimal amount of specularity. The presence of specular reflections produced by highly specular surfaces confuse traditional vision systems and may mask the true location of an object and lead to incorrect measurements. This article describes the development of a f...
